How to Get the German Passport

In order to obtain a German passport, knowledge and concrete data about the German grandfather, great-grandfather, etc. of the German relative must first be available and the date and place of birth in Germany must be researched. With all this data and a complete family tree of the German ancestor, the entire lineage of the family and documents proving the right to obtain German citizenship, this procedure can be initiated at the German consulate.

It should be noted that in most cases the family members do not have the evidence of the German family member, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc. The requirements for obtaining a German passport may vary from case to case. We will be happy to help you with this procedure.

If you do not have the required documents and obtaining a German passport ends up being difficult, you can apply for a German document search service through our Genealogy and Document Search Service. In most cases, the German embassy or consulate does not perform any searches. These documents must be obtained by the individual themselves.

German Passport Renewal/strong>

If a German citizen or dual citizen wishes to renew his or her German passport, he or she must appear in person at the German embassy or consulate near his or her residence and submit all of the required documents described below. The German diplomatic missions may request additional documents if necessary. To do so, you must make an appointment online in the section Appointments at the German Embassy.

It is not possible to extend the validity of an expired German passport. The estimated time for issuance and delivery is about two months after submitting the application and attaching the appropriate documents. This is because German passports are issued in Germany and this takes time. In certain urgent cases, the German Embassy can issue a temporary German passport.

Renewal of the German Citizenship Card (Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis or Heimatschein)

Due to changed requirements, it is no longer possible to extend or renew the German passport without submitting the German citizenship certificate at the same time. Due to the long processing times, it is recommended for people who do not yet have a German citizenship certificate to begin the German citizenship verification process approximately 2 years before their German passport expires. If you already have a German citizenship card and it has expired, it is advisable to apply for an extension of the German citizenship card.
